Speedway is planning to hire about 500 workers in central Ohio this spring as the retailer gears up for the busy summer travel season and deals with expansion.

The company needs to hire at least 100 managers, either shift-leader trainees or co-managers. It also wants to hire 400 customer-service representatives or food-service specialists for the market.

“We are always looking for quality people,” said Robb Kelso, a Speedway recruiter. “We are looking for people who like to have fun.”

Although the company typically has a hiring event every spring, this year’s hiring is especially robust, he said.

Many workers hired previously have been promoted, and a stronger economy means there is a need for additional staff members, he said.

“This is our busiest time of the year,” Kelso said.

The hiring comes as gasoline prices are running at least $1 per gallon below where they were a year ago, spurring consumer confidence and the expectation of more summer travel.

“Sustained lower gas prices will lead … to extended domestic travel by car,” said Michael Wolf, an economist with Wells Fargo & Co. “If you’re not paying more at the pump, consumers feel like they can spend more inside the store on hot dogs and soda.”

Speedway has scheduled interviews for Saturday and Monday at six central Ohio locations — four in Columbus, one in Canal Winchester and one in Hilliard. District managers, human-resources staff and store managers will be on hand for the interviews.

Interviews on Saturday will take place between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. at 6399 Refugee Rd. in Canal Winchester, at 2567 Walcutt Rd. in Hilliard and at 770 Polaris Parkway in Columbus. Interviews on Monday will take place between 2 and 6 p.m. at three locations in Columbus: 4901 E. Main St., 4797 W. Broad St. and 5735 Maple Canyon Ave.

Those planning to interview in person are asked to bring a resume.

Applicants can apply online at www.jobs.speedway.com, as well.

Depending on experience, the customer-service and food-service jobs can pay $8.25 to $8.80 per hour. Workers also are eligible for bonuses.

Shift-leader positions can pay about $10 per hour, and compensation for managerial positions is negotiable.

Already this year, the company says it has hired more than 200 for leadership positions in the Columbus area.
